Illegal wildlife products seized in Palawan

The Philippine Navy’s Naval Forces West has reported the seizure of illegal wildlife products at Purok Pagkakaisa, Brgy San Pedro, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

The operation was held on evening of September 23 with Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) and Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD).

“As a result of joint operatives effort, said operation was able to recover the following: thirty eight (38) sacks (2,588 kilos) of dried pangolin scale; eighteen (18) boxes of dried seahorse (229 kilos) and sea dragon (86.5 kilos); and nine (9) ice boxes (531 kilos) of dried sea turtle scutes which have an estimated local market value of Php 68,690,000.00 in the black market,” Naval Forces West said.

“However, in mainland China and Hongkong, the black market value of the recovered items is amounting to 10,306,500 US Dollars (Php535,938,000.00),” it added.

The killing, hunting, processing and trading of protected wildlife animals is a violation under Republic Act 9147 of 2001 otherwise known as “Conservation and Protection of Wildlife Resources”.

“The results of the law enforcement operations manifests that Naval Forces West is always committed in its mandate not just protecting the territorial integrity and the welfare of the Public but also upholds its mandate as Deputy of Wildlife Enforcement to protect the country’s wildlife resources,” Naval Forces West noted.
