The Philippine government’s Frigate Acquisition Project (FAP) for Philippine Navy in unlikely to be cancelled, this was assured by National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
“With all the facts we know about the frigate [acquisition]? No,” Secretary Lorenzana said as quoted by PNA.
Earlier, the Department of National Defense (DND) said conditions set in the Government Procurement Reform Act to cancel a contract are not present in the frigate deal with South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries.
“There is a proper process prescribed in Republic Act No. 9184 (Government Procurement Reform Act) concerning the termination of a procurement project and there are specific conditions that must be present in order to invoke it, none of which are existing at the moment in this project,” DND said.
The DND also welcomed the Senate inquiry on the said acquisition program initiated by minority senators.
“The DND welcomes the plan of the Senate to conduct an investigation on the Frigate Acquisition Project. In fact, we have long been waiting for the opportunity to shed light on this issue so that the truth will finally be known,” DND public affairs office chief Arsenio Andolong said.
