First-ever PHL-made train expected to operate this quarter

The Department of Science and Techology (DOST) has announced that the first ever Philippine made train, the Hybrid Electric Train (HET) will officially be used by the Philippine National Railways (PNR) within this quarter.

According to DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Peña, will run a route within the first quarter of 2019.

De la Peña said the Philippine-made HET passed all the required tests and is only waiting for the validation of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) benchmarking done last year.

“Implemented with the goal of augmenting the number of trainsets currently being used by the PNR, the HET project is envisioned to come up with an R&D output that will serve as a long-term solution to heavy traffic congestions in many parts of the country, particularly in Luzon,” DOST-Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) said.

The Hybrid Electric Train (HET) was launched to the public in June 2016. As part of the observance of the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), HET was made available for public demonstration, PNR Dela Rosa to PNR EDSA and vice versa, from July 17-21 last year.
