First aircraft carrier made in China goes out for sea trial

Reports from Chinese state media are saying that China’s first domestically built aircraft carrier, Type 001A, left the Dalian Shipyard morning of Sunday, May 13 for its first sea trial.

Global Times quoted Song Zhongping, a military expert and TV commentator, saying that the sea trial will focus on the testing of the aircraft carrier’s basic systems, including power, communication, fire safety, and electro-mechanics being a producer’s sea trial.

“Weapon systems and carrier-based aircrafts are unlikely to participate in the first sea trial, and combat capability tests will be carried out by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy after the carrier is formally delivered to the navy. Before this, its producer may need about six months to finish tests, which means the navy will receive the ship by the end of this year,” Song said.

The lone Chinese aircraft carrier, Liaoning, in active service is a retrofitted Soviet Navy warship. Type 001A was patterned on Liaoning.
