Effort like Boracay clean-up awaits for Manila Bay

A clean-up drive like what was done in Boracay will be implemented to rehabilitate the Manila Bay, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said during the January 8 press briefing in Malacañang.

“[T]he policy of the government is if you violate certain regulations – then you have to pay for that. Kung ano iyong ginawa natin sa Boracay, iyon din ang gagawin natin sa lahat,” he said when asked if the Palace is looking at possible closures of establishments that are dumping their wastes in Manila Bay.

However, Panelo noted that the timeline would be longer. “Maraming rivers eh ‘di ba – papunta lahat doon sa Manila Bay. Kailangan tanggalin mo muna iyon, iyong mga esteros lilinisin, so palagay ko matagal na process ‘to. It will take some time, but what is important is uumpisahan.”

Panelo also added that President Rodrigo Duterte will “most likely” release an executive order for the clean-up of Manila Bay just like what he did for Boracay.

When asked regarding the extent of stakeholders in Manila Bay, Panelo said “in Boracay marami ring stakeholders, but it required political will of the President and he will do it. To my mind, what is very important is finally we are going to start cleaning Manila Bay.”
