President Rodrigo Duterte is scheduled to inaugurate the world-class terminal 2 of Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) on June 6, two weeks ahead of schedule, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.
“In less than three months, the world-class Terminal 2 of the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) will be ready to serve local and international passengers going in and out of the Queen City of the South,” DOTr said.
It added that MCIA’s terminal 2 is undergoing Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) program, which includes intensive testing of facilities, information technology and airport systems, as well as human resource readiness, among others.
The development of Mactan-Cebu International Airport Passenger Terminal Building is a public-private partnership between Department of Transportation (DOTr)-Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority and GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC).
The partnership is a 25-year Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT) scheme. Construction of new terminal building started in mid-2015.
“The project involves the construction of a new world-class passenger terminal building in MCIA, with a capacity of about 8 million passengers per year; and the operation of the old and new facilities,” the PPP Center said.
GMCAC said the enhancements of existing terminal made possible the efficient accommodation of over almost 8 million passengers despite a design capacity of only 4.5 million passengers per annum.
“The terminal will be brought into service by 2018, increasing the airport’s handling capacity to 12.5 million passengers per annum,” GMCAC said.
