President Rodrigo Duterte has assured communist leader Joma Sison that he will not be assassinated in the Philippines. “I’m ready to give him the privilege of coming home,” Duterte said during the Presidential Security Group (PSG) Change of Command Ceremony.
“He does not have to worry about his safety. I will provide his – I may call on maybe members of his command to protect him,” he added. “I have provided a small window of 60 days. And if you come home, do not worry about being killed. I will not do that.”
Duterte said that if the peace talks will again fail he will let Sison safely leave the country. He said he told Sison, “I’m giving you my word of honor. It is my word and I would say, Umuwi ka, mag-usap tayo earnestly, sincerely.”
Duterte said now that he is the President, “I also think and feel like a soldier. Every time I read the briefer and there’s so many soldiers killed or policemen, I kind of – minsan tinatapon ko ito eh. Just throw it away, because I’m also bothered and affected emotionally.”
“But ‘yung politiko lang ako, mayor ako ng Davao, wala naman akong pakialam diyan. But this time, sabi ko nga, sabihin ko sa kanya: Please, if it is unsuccessful, please go home,” he said.
“Ihatid ko siya sa airport. Walang [Ninoy] Aquino-style na patayan, na barilin ko sa likod, no, it’s not my [style],” he said.
