Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua has paid a courtesy call to President Rodrigo Duterte on October 8 to discuss the upcoming visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Philippines next month.
According to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, the Chinese side has expressed concern over the naval military exercise the United States will be conducting in the area at about the same time that President Xi will be in the Philippines.
“The President said we’ll not take part in the US military exercise,” Roque said.
“We do not want to mar the visit of President Xi and we’re hoping the DFA will make sure the visit would be fruitful and productive,” Roque explained. “We want a seamless visit of President Xi.”
“Any military confrontation in WPS will have dark consequences as far as Chinese commerce is concern,” he added.
