Duterte administration’s secret diplomacy not working – Alejano

News

“Whatever secret diplomacy the Duterte administration is pursuing, it is clearly not working,” Magdalo Partylist Representative Gary C. Alejano said in statement. “In fact, China even stepped up its aggressive actions under Duterte‚Äôs foreign policy.”

This is after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it is closely monitoring developments in the West Philippine Sea and the South China Sea in close coordination with the other relevant departments and agencies.

“We are taking the appropriate diplomatic action necessary to protect our claims and will continue to do so in the future,” DFA said. “We reiterate our commitment to protect every single inch of our territory and areas which we have sovereign rights over.”

“The country has gained much under the Duterte Administration. Fighting for our rights under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and under our present stategy, we intend to achieve much more, including, but not limited to, an effective comprehensive Code of Conduct that will promote peace, cooperation, and stability in the West Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. Moving forward, we are taking a different approach to avoid any drawbacks and challenges,” DFA said.

Alejano said while they are insisting that there have been diplomatic actions, the result that we are seeing on the ground is an emboldened China pushing our limits.

“Hindi naman natin napoprotektahan ang ating interes sa West Philippine Sea sa ginagawang palihim na mga pag-uusap sa China,” he added.

“Sa isyu ng mga pinagtatalunang teritoryo sa South China Sea, hindi lamang Pilipinas ang may interes dito kundi pati ibang mga bansa sa Southeast at East Asia. This is why the more effective approach is through multi-lateral engagements and open diplomacy and making use of the UN Permanent Court of Arbitration ruling as leverage. There is no need to go to war – as what Duterte has been insisting to the public,” he explained.

He said “we are becoming a liability to other claimant states and neighboring nations.”

“Ipinapahamak ng administrasyong Duterte ang seguridad ng buong rehiyon sa ginagawa nitong pananahimik at pagiging sunud-sunuran sa China,” he added.
