President Rodrigo Duterte talked through phone with Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Malago Clubhouse in Malacañang on September 7, 2020.

On August 28, Prime Minister Abe announced that he will be stepping down as Prime Minister for health reasons.

“It is with much regret that I learned of Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s resignation,” President Duterte said in a statement after Abe’s announcement. “Through many years of our engagement, I have seen a leader with a bold vision and firm determination to do what was best for his country and our region.”

“What we have worked for and achieved together lays the foundation for an even closer friendship and cooperation between our countries in the future,” Duterte said.

“He is – to me and the Filipino people – a true friend closer than a brother,” President Duterte said.
