Donated South Korean Pohang-class corvette, the former ROKS Chungju (PCC-762), will be known as BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39) in Philippine Navy service, according to MaxDefense Philippines, citing sources.

Philippine Army Captain Conrado Yap served as one of the 1,468 Filipino troops comprising the Philippine Expeditionary Forces to Korea (PEFTOK).

He was posthumously awarded “for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life against overwhelming enemy forces at Yultong, North Korea on 22-23 April 1951.”

The upcoming BRP Conrado Yap is expected to arrive in March or April this year as stated by Navy chief Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad.

“[T]his March, makukuha na natin ‘yung corvette [donated] by South Korea so baka ma-deliver na yun. Papunta na kasi ‘yung personnel natin for training by January, so kung March or April matatapos meron na tayong gagamitin,” Empedrad said.
