The Department of Justice (DOJ) has said that Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra is set to order today, July 20 the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct investigation regarding deaths of 9 high-profile inmates including Jaybee Sebastian.

Earlier today, Secretary Guevarra met with BuCor chief Director General Gerald Bantag to discuss the said deaths due to COVID-19.

According to DOJ, Bantag confirmed that 21 PDLs (persons deprived of liberty) died of COVID-19 since March.

Bantag also assured Guevarra that the health situation within BuCor is under control. As of today, there are only 5 PDLs isolated at Site Hary, the biggest quarantine and isolation facility at BuCor.

Bantag also noted that BuCor is following protocols in case of PDL’s death due to COVID-19, including cremation within 12 hours, to prevent further spread of the disease.

“In any case, to dispel any doubt regarding the death of PDL Sebastian and the eight others, DG Bantag welcomed an independent investigation on the matter. Secretary Guevarra is set to issue later today a Department Order directing the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct such investigation,” DOJ said.
