President Rodrigo Duterte has instructed government officials to study the possibility of conscripting at least 4000 Maranaos who were affected by the Marawi City battle into the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP).
“He instructed the Presidential Adviser on Mindanao Affairs, TESDA, the Presidential Adviser on OFW to study ways and means to conscript into the AFP and the PNP at least 4,000 Maranaos affected by the fighting in Marawi and other areas where the Maranaos have settled,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said during the January 9 press briefing in Malacañang.
Presidential Adviser on overseas Filipino workers (OFW) Secretary Abdullah Mamao is also the Presidential Adviser on Muslim Concerns.
This possibility was welcomed by the Department of National Defense (DND).
“The President’s directive to concerned government agencies to study ways and means by which members of indigenous communities can join the ranks of our defenders in protecting Filipino communities is in line with our current efforts to establish a more inclusive AFP in order to enhance our existing community-based peace dialogues in several areas around the country, including Marawi City,” DND said in a statement.
