Dela Rosa acknowledges Alejano’s concern to police force

After a heated exchange of statements, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa acknowledged the good intentions of Magdalo Partylist Representative Gary Alejano for the police force.

The exchange of statements stemmed from the observations of Congressman Alejano regarding police operations against illegal drugs. Alejano also made some recommendations based the observations.

Among the observations of Alejano were the timing of operations and firearms used by drug suspects. The lawmaker also recommended several actions that included addressing the supply side of the illegal drug problem, internal cleansing, and strengthening of institutions and processes.

However, General dela Rosa said Alejano was a Marine and not a police. “Kung pulis ka sana alam mo na ‘yung transaction ng droga nangyayari sa gabi. ‘Pag umaga lahat ng addict, mga pusher tulog ‘yan,” dela Rosa said. “If you are a criminal gusto mo ba gumamit ng baril na may lisensya na may serial number na ma-trace sayo o sa kaninumang tao na madadamay sa ginawa mong krimen? It will go back to you.”

Alejano responded by releasing a statement saying “the intention is to review the implementation of the main policy of this administration in order to address its flaws and shortcomings which have already resulted to tens of thousands of deaths.”

“I have been forwarding recommendations on how the anti-drug campaign must be carried out,” he added. “This is why I proposed to equip police with body cameras. Unfortunately, General Dela Rosa chose sniffing dogs instead. I have also filed a bill for the modernization and reorganization of the PNP.”

“While I respect his experience as a police officer, I must remind him that he is a servant of the Filipino people whom he swore to serve and protect regardless whether one is a victim or a suspect. His loyalty must be to the Constitution for he is not a private army of one man,” Alejano said.

In his latest response on Monday, dela Rosa said “noted, Congressman Sir. I made that comment because the interview was held at the Borromeo Field [of PMA in Baguio City] so what was in my mind was that I am a police officer and he is a Marine officer.”

“We will take the recommendations from the good congressman. I know that in his heart is not all criticisms but good intentions for the PNP,” dela Rosa added. “In fact, he has some bills for the welfare of the PNP and I appreciate that. I would thank the congressman for his efforts in our search to improve the performance of the PNP.”
