National Defense Secretary Delfin N. Lorenzana, during an online forum organized by National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP) in partnership with the NDCP Alumni Association Inc (NDCPAAI), has expressed concern about the reported possibility of China declaring of an air defense identification zone (ADIZ) in the South China Sea.
“There is no need for China to do that because the South China Sea is a global common where anybody can pass through,” the defense secretary said.
He also explained that the deferment of VFA termination is a development towards balancing of power in the West Philippines Sea. He also clarified that there is no VFA re-negotiation going on between the Philippines and the United States.
During the forum, Secretary Lorenzana also highlighted the need for “more teeth” to enable law enforcement agencies to address the threat of terrorism.
