Construction of PHL’s 1st modern frigate reaches milestone

The Philippine Navy’s The Frigate Acquisition Project (FAP) has reached another milestone through the Keel Laying Ceremony for the first frigate at around 10 am on October 16 at Ulsan, South Korea.

Present during the the event were Philippine Navy’s Flag Officer-in-Command Vice Admiral Robert A. Empedrad, Department of National Defense Chief for Acquisition Office Director Leodegario Decena Dela Paz, Naval Sea Systems Command commander Rear Admiral Giovanni Carlo J. Bacordo, Offshore Combat Force commander Commodore Caesar Bernard Valencia and Capt Sergio Bartolome, the PN Foreign Frigate Owners Representative.

They were joined by the Senior Vice President of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Mr Yun Kong Yong.

“The ceremony was conducted at the building dock number 6 of the Special and Naval Shipbuilding Division of HHI. Three blocks of the first PN frigate (with HHI Project Nr 159) was installed on the dock,” said Captain Bartolome, the PN officer overseeing the project at HHI.

“The keel laying ceremony is a significant activity and a major step towards the completion of the country’s first ever frigate project which is scheduled to be delivered to the PN by 2020,” the Navy said.
