Coast Guard launching VTMS funded by Japan

The Philippine Coast Guard’s (PCG) Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) will be inaugurated at Coast Guard District Central Visayas, Pier 3 in Cebu City on February 12.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of the Philippines Koji Haneda will be among the primary guests.

Department of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade will be the keynote speaker.

PCG said the VTMS is part of the Enhancement of Coastal Communications Systems under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) official development assistance (ODA) worth 1.152 billion yen.

The VTMS project is composed of VTMS Control Center and three radar stations.

“The system is designed to prevent maritime accidents; like the St Thomas Aquinas in Mactan, Cebu in 2013,” PCG said.
