A Chinese warship shadowed BRP Conrado Yap (PS39), a former Pohang-class corvette donated by South Korea, while sailing to Philippines, Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad told Bombo Radyo.
“Kung minsan nasunod sila eh gaya nung umuwi itong BRP Conrado Yap natin merong nag sa shadow na Chinese Frigate pero nang sinabi ng barko natin na we are now entering our territorial waters umalis din sila,” Vice Admiral Empedrad said as quoted by Bombo Radyo.
The Navy chief said that Philippine Navy ships will not hesitate to warn foreign vessels violating Philippine territory.
Empedrad also noted that currently BRP Conrado Yap is the most powerful ship in Philippine Navy service.
“Ito kasing barko natin siya na ngayon ang pinaka most powerful ship in the inventory of the Philippine Navy eh kung may bago kang barko siyempre malaki ang impact nito sa cability ng navy, itong barko na to makakatagal ito ng 20 days at sea so it will certainly help us in patrolling our maritime waters,” he said.
The Philippine Navy today welcomed BRP Conrado Yap. She departed Jinhae Naval Base in Changwon City, South Korea on August 12. She was commissioned to Philippine Navy service on August 5.
