National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that the Philippines is conducting maritime patrols in West Philippine Sea using aircraft with sensors.
However, the defense chief said that every time a patrol is conducted China is challenging Philippine aircraft.
“Every time that they fly over these features occupied by the Chinese, they are being challenged,” Secretary Lorenzana told CNN Philippines’ The Source on March 19. “They will say: You are entering Chinese airspace.”
Secretary Lorenzana said both side are just exchanging words. He said the Philippine side will reply by saying: “No, we are passing over Philippine airspace.”
“It’s just a play of words but it happens every time our patrols go around,” he added.
He added that the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) are regularly conducting patrols in Philippine Rise and West Philippine Sea.
