President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to lead the inauguration of the world-class terminal.

Commercial operation of the said airport terminal is expected to start in July 1.

“The MCIA’s new passenger terminal building will increase the airport’s annual passenger capacity from 4.5 million to 12 million,” the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said. “MCIA will be utilizing energy-efficient and environment-friendly facilities to reduce the terminal’s impact to the environment.”

DOTr also said that the terminal building was designed in collaboration with world-class Cebuano and Filipino artists, as well as international design and architectural firms, with the aim to provide a welcoming ambiance that is distinctly Filipino.

The development of MCIA terminal 2 is a public-private partnership between DOTr-MCIA Authority and GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC).

The partnership is a 25-year Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT) scheme. Construction of new terminal building started in mid-2015.

“The project involves the construction of a new world-class passenger terminal building in MCIA, with a capacity of about 8 million passengers per year; and the operation of the old and new facilities,” the PPP Center said.
