The first combat ship ordered and designed for the Philippine Navy, the future BRP Jose Rizal (FF-150) will be launched to the sea on May 23 at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI)’s facility in Ulsan, South Korea.
“She is the first combat ship to be designed and acquired for the PN along with her sister-ship, the BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151) whose steel-cutting is also scheduled for this week,” said Philippine Navy spokesperson Captain Jonathan Zata as quoted by Philippine News Agency.
Defense Undersecretary Raymundo Elefante, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief-of-Staff General Benjamin Madrigal Jr., and Navy chief Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad are expected to attend the launching event.
The Philippines ordered two frigates from HHI worth PHP16 billion.
The two ordered frigates are scheduled to be delivered 2020 and 2021.
