BRP Gabriela Silang officially enters coast guard service


The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)’s currently largest and newest patrol vessel BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301) has officially entered the coast guard service.

BRP Gabriela Silang officially entered service during her commissioning ceremony held today, April 13.

The short and simple ceremony was attended by Transportation Secretary Arthur P. Tugade and PCG Commandant Admiral Joel S Garcia.

“Sa kasagsagan ng enhanced community quarantine, gagamitin ng PCG ang BRP Gabriela Silang sa pagbibiyahe ng mga frontline health workers, medical supplies, PPE, at gamot sa mga regional hospitals sa buong bansa,” PCG said.

BRP Gabriela Silang was built by shipbuilder OCEA in France. Prior to her departure for Philippines on December 31, a hoisting of Philippine flag ceremony was held December 18.

Arrival was expected in February, however, BRP Gabriela Silang was directed to provide ready assistance for Filipinos who want to be repatriated from the Middle East.

She arrived in Manila April 7.
