The Philippine Navy, through its BRP Conrado Yap (PS39), detected a United States Navy submarine in November 2019, Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Robert Empedrad said on January 15, 2020 during a media interview.

“The BRP Conrado Yap was able to detect a submarine while it was travelling in Palawan. That was the first time that it happened to our navy,” Vice Admiral Empedrad said as quoted by Manila Bulletin.

The detection was made while BRP Conrado Yap was sailing to Zamboanga for the show of flag mission.

BRP Conrado Yap is a former Pohang-class corvette donated by South Korea.

According to Empedrad, at any given time there are around 50 submarines in Philippine waters. “Sabi ko nga, kung tanggalin mo ‘yung dagat sa Pilipinas baka makakita ka ng 50 submarines sa paligid natin,” he said.

“In the future, we will be able to have so many ships that will hunt down submarines and it would be nice because we will be aware of our surroundings,” he added.

He also said that the Philippines needs submarines. “We need submarines if we want to get the respect of other countries,” he said.
