Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)-Western Mindanao Command (WESTMINCOM) said the soldiers were conducting operations to rescue remaining Abu Sayyaf kidnap victims when they encountered about five Abu Sayyaf members led by Juljirin.

The soldiers acted on a tip off regarding the location of the group. According sources, the group of Juljirin were in the location nursing their wounds they incurred during an encounter with military early March, WESTMINCOM said.

The companions of wounded Juljirin fled after a five-minute firefight.

“Our soldiers eventually captured ASG subleader Walton Juljirin, during the clearing operation,” said Joint Task Force Sulu Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana. “The troops immediately gave him medical attention before bringing him to the headquarters of the 501st Brigade in Brgy Tagbak, Indanan, Sulu.”

WESTMINCOM said also recovered were one cal 7.62 FN-G1 rifle, magazines, ammunition, suspected Improvised Explosive Device and two hand grenades.

“The group of Walton Juljirin is also under the group of ASG sub-leader Mundi Sawadjaan (nephew of ASG leader Hajan Sawadjaan). His group was responsible for the series of IED and roadside bombings along the highways of Patikul, Sulu. Also, Juljirin’s group is the liquidation squad of Sawadjaan’s group,” WESTMINCOM commanding general Lieutenant General Carlito G Galvez, Jr. said.

“With the capture of Juljirin, we are optimistic that we will gain more grounds and soon defeat the Abu Sayyaf here in the island Provinces,” Galvez added. “Our priority is to find and rescue the remaining kidnap victims who are still in the Sulu area. We are currently doubling our efforts towards that goal.”
