The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will be using two oil rigs that ceased production in Nido and Matinloc oil fields in Palawan.

“This is a very good development for the Armed Forces as it will increase our maritime domain awareness and our operational reach,” said AFP chief General Felimon Santos Jr. who inspected the platforms on May 28.

General Santos also said that the facility can serve as a shelter for fisherfolks as well as researchers from the national government agencies.

The AFP said the Nido and Matinloc platforms in Palawan are pegged to augment the country’s maritime domain awareness.”

“The platforms are part of the Nido and Matinloc oil fields in Northwest Palawan that ceased production in November last year after over four decades of operations,” AFP said. “The two fields produced a total of 31 million barrels of oil.”
