Former President Benigno Aquino III said that President Rodrigo Duterte may have forgotten, due to many things a president is thinking, the date when the Tribunal at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague released its ruling on the case filed by Philippines against China’s massive claim over West Philippine Sea.
The arbitration case was filed January 22, 2013 and was decided July 12, 2016 favoring Philippines.
Aquino said that it was during his administration when the arbitration against China’s massive maritime claim was filed, responding to statements that his administration did nothing against China’s reclamation and militarization in the disputed sea.
“Who filed the arbitration? Who campaigned among ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) countries? Which administration produced the communique or the statements critical of all these island-developing by China,” Aquino said during a press conference June 4.
He said at that time the Philippines only have Vietnam as a staunch partner because many of economies in ASEAN were dependent on China.
“But that did not stop us from securing a joint statement,” he said.
“2014, 2015 – nawala ‘yung sobrang motherhood na mga unang joint statements, after nung ASEAN Summit, medyo tumapang ‘yung sinasabi. Tinrabaho natin ‘yun,” he added.
