AFP challenged 40,135 vessels in Philippine waters

The Armed Force of the Philippines (AFP) has challenged a total of 40,135 vessels passing through Philippine waters as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) effort to protect the national territory and uphold sovereignty, National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said at the Pilipinas Conference 2018 on December 7.

“Thus far, the AFP detected 46,694 incidents and challenged 40,135 vessels passing through Philippine waters,” Secretary Lorenzana said.

He also noted that littoral monitoring detachments and littoral observatory stations provided common air and maritime operating picture in the West Philippine Sea, Philippine Rise and other parts of the Philippine territory.

“The AFP continues to show presence within our exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Our naval units performed 3,836 surface missions with a total steaming of 120,696 hours covering an area of 143,445 square nautical miles,” he said.

“Moreover, our air units provided 5,550 flying hours in 3,490 sorties covering 12,157.5 square nautical miles,” he added.
