Adventist medical missionary couple dies in Calbayog City fire

A fire that hit a residential house inside the Adventist Hospital compound in Calbayog City claimed the lives of a missionary couple on Saturday. 

The fatalities were identified as Pacifico Maypa, 65, the hospital’s medical director from Iloilo City, and wife Delie Mae Maypa, 57, a nurse from Ozamis City.

Both are medical missionaries who were staying at the doctor’s residential building of the Adventist Hospital when the fire broke out around 4:20 a.m. on Saturday. 

In a phone interview Sunday, Fire Officer Kenny Orcit of Calbayog said the fire razed the one-story residential building at the hospital compound in San Policarpo village with estimated damage cost of PHP455,000. 

Other nine occupants of the building that include the family of the hospital business office worker and four visiting denominational auditors managed to escape the creeping fire. 

After few minutes of combating the blaze, the responding firefighters declared fire out at 4:40 a.m. 

The Bureau of Fire Protection is still conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. 

The couple has been medical missionaries for Adventist Hospital since November 2018.  They previously worked as medical missionaries in Zambia, Africa for eight years. PNA.GOV.PH
