UPDATED: 76 members of the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group who have surrendered to the government together with their weapons were presented to President Rodrigo Duterte in Patikul, Sulu on March 26. Also presented were high-powered firearms collected by local government units in Sulu.
Among those who accompanied the President were Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan II; Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief-of-Staff General Rey Leonardo Guerrero.
“I came here because I‟ve been reading it, hearing it, seeing it on TV of the number – iilan sa ating mga kapatid nagsu-surrender this time en masse,” Duterte said.
“Just like the NPAs, it used to be na ‘yung mag-surrender ka ng armas na ikaw okay, pero dalhin mo ang armas, it’s taboo. Talagang bawal ‘yan,” he said. “But at the rate they are surrendering maybe kung maawa si Allah, next year we might experience a better environment in the Philippines.”
“I came here to know if the surrenderees, ‘yung nag-surrender are treated just like what we are doing with NPAs. Na pag-surrender nila, is there somebody presiding over the ceremony that will take care of them, alagaan muna sila and usually in the mainland Mindanao, binibigyan sila ng bahay. At in the meantime, are they’re learning ‘yung trabaho kung ano ang gusto nilang mangyari after the surrender,” he said.
“Kaya naman nandito si Atty. Gene Mamondiong. He is a Maranao. Dala ko siya because he is the TESDA and training na sakali kung gustong mag-aral ng bagong technique na pamumuhay maturuan kaagad,” he added.
