Two of three Philippine Navy (PN) Multi-Purpose Attack Craft (MPAC) Mark IIIs will be guarding the Malampaya gas field, Naval Forces West (NAVFORWEST) spokesperson Navy Lieutenant Junior Grade Maivi Neri said.
Lieutenant Junior Grade Neri said these attack crafts will be operating under Joint Task Force-Malampaya of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Command (WESCOM).
On February 15, Philippine Fleet’s Littoral Combat Force sent-off the two MPACs together Jose Andrada-class coastal patrol boat BRP Nestor Reinoso (PC380) for their deployment to NAVFORWEST.
Neri said the vessels may also be used for rescue operations.
In May 2017, a total of 3 MPAC Mark IIIs were activated to navy service ahead of the installation of their missile systems procured from Israel. The ordered weapons from Israel were scheduled to be delivered in December 2017, however, delivery was moved to early this year.
NAVFORWEST is the naval WESCOM responsible for combating terrorism and insurgency in Palawan and tasked to protect Philippines’ sovereignty and sovereign rights in the Kalayaan Island Group in West Philippine Sea.
