PHL, Malaysia reaffirm commitment to defense cooperation

The Philippine Department of National Defense and the Malaysian Ministry of Defense reaffirmed their commitment in upholding the implementation of the 1994 Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries.

During the 9th Philippines-Malaysia Combined Committee on Defense Cooperation (CDCC) held on 31 March 2021 via video teleconference, Defense Undersecretary for Capability Assessment and Development Cesar B. Yano co-chaired with Malaysian Ministry of Defence Secretary General Hon. Sri Muez bin Abd Aziz.

The two defense officials acknowledged the consistent enhancement of bilateral defense cooperation throughout the years with the significant interactions and engagements between military officials and personnel.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated the postponement of activities between the two countries, both parties welcomed plans to resume several dialogue platforms and trainings this year when conditions normalize.

Both sides also exchanged insights and best practices on their respective response to COVID-19, as well as views on the recent developments in the West Philippine Sea/South China Sea and the Mindanao Peace Process.

Moreover, Usec Yano acknowledged Malaysia’s invaluable contribution as Head of Mission of the International Monitoring Team (IMT). He further commended the efforts of the IMT in monitoring the implementation of the security, socioeconomic development, humanitarian and civilian protection components of the peace process between the PH government and the Moro Islamic Libaration Front (MILF).
