Philippine Navy chief jumpstarts strategic partnership with Turkish Naval Forces

Philippine Navy (PN) Flag Officer In Command, Vice Adm. Giovanni Carlo Bacordo paid a courtesy call on his counterpart, Admiral Adnan Özbal, the commander of Turkey’s Naval Forces during his visit to the Republic of Turkey on April 12, 2021.

Both Navy chiefs expressed willingness to improve bilateral relations that would open up opportunities for the conduct of naval exercises, maritime security collaboration, and personnel exchanges for training and conduct of online seminars. These would be possible upon the available option of working under a framework of agreement focusing on defense cooperation between the two Navies, which would enable conditions to fine-tune the details and scope of the bilateral relations.

The successful engagement with the Turkish Navy has paved the way for the development of close and cordial relations between the two navies that could result in a strategic partnership in the maritime domain.

Navy chief Bacordo was accompanied by Fleet Deputy Commander, Commo Renato David, Offshore Combat Force Commander, Commo Joe Anthony Orbe, Submarine Group Commander, Navy Capt Edwin Nera, Naval Shipyard Commander, Navy Capt Nestor Galindo and Director of the PN Modernization Office, Navy Capt Emerson David during this visit that aimed to explore methods of collaboration with the Turkish government, its Navy, and other agencies in terms of pursuing PN modernization efforts.

The PN delegation also went to the Turkish Fleet Command headquarters, Istanbul Naval Shipyard and Gölcük Naval Shipyard to witness their shipbuilding capabilities and other competencies.

The visit to the ASFAT facilities, a state-owned defense contractor that is directly under the Ministry of Defense of Turkey, provided the PN leadership an appreciation on the countrys capacity to provide technological solutions for the requirements of the PN in its current and future modernization efforts.
