Operating troops of the Joint Task Force Basilan engaged in an armed confrontation with the members of the local terrorist group in the municipality of Sumisip on October 16, 2020.
“Based on the initial report from the ground, troops of the 68th Infantry Battalion were conducting combat operation when they chanced upon more or less 10 fully-armed local terrorists at Sitio Penas, Barangay Benembengan of the said municipality at 1:45 p.m. today,” said Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, Jr., WestMinCom Commander.
“A short firefight ensued which lasted for five minutes after which the enemy withdrew bringing along their casualties with them,” Lt. Gen. Vinluan, Jr. added.
Troops are in hot pursuit of the fleeing enemies.
“We are thankful that no one from our side was hurt during the armed confrontation,” said Col. Domingo Gobway, JTF Basilan Commander.
“Our troops are still scouring the area to possibly determine the number of casualties on the enemy side,” Col. Gobway added.
The unit deployed troops to establish a blockade in the possible withdrawal routes of the enemies. WESTERN MINDANAO COMMAND
