Navy ship rescues distressed fishing vessel

BRP Apolinario Mabini (PS36) under the operational control of Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao (NFEM), rescued and assisted a distressed fishing vessel at the vicinity of Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental early morning of May 13, 2020.

PS36 under the command of Cdr Lemar Rio Dela Calzada PN (GSC) was on Territorial Defense Operations (TDO) at the common borders of the Philippines and Republic of Indonesia when this Command received a distress call from from Lcdr Francis R Aguilar PN (Res), Commander, 74th Naval Group Reserve (NGR), General Santos City. PS36 was immediately notified and directed to conduct Search and Rescue Operation to F/B 811, a fishing vessel owned by Jojo Cantoja of Jolyrob Fishing Company. Said fishing vessel encountered derangement on her main shafting and was dead on water and being drifted for approximately 9 hours.

Upon receiving the directive, PS36 immediately proceeded to the distressed vessel at the vicinity of Cape San Agustin. While enroute to the said position, PS36 tried to establish communications and prepared for rescue and assistance / towing operations, arrived at the said position at exactly 6:13am.

PS36 towed the said fishing boat safely to 16NM East of Banos Point, Davao Occidental and turned it over to her sister vessel, FB 808. Said vessels are now proceeding to General Santos.
