BRP Jose Rizal (FF150), crossed the international date line (IDL) on August 10, 2020 while transiting the Pacific Ocean bound for the Rim of the Pacific 2020 (RIMPAC20) Exercise in Hawaii, marking her first “crossing the line” ceremony in celebration of the time-honored naval tradition.

The ceremony took place with the members of the Naval Task Group (NTG 80.5) personnel who have not yet experienced said ancient ceremony, otherwise known as the Domain of the Golden Dragon, near the Midway Island, Federal State of Micronesia, USA.

The NTG commander, Capt. Jerry Garrido Jr., warmly congratulated his troops for, “this momentous event in their Navy life.”

“May this celebration be a memorable experience as we participate in RIMPAC20. Your efforts are very much appreciated,” Garrido added.

Crossing the line ceremonies were adopted by the Philippine Navy as its ships started overseas deployments. It ensures that said rites will be enjoyable, memorable and safe among the “pollywogs” or personnel who have not crossed the line.

Said ceremony boosts morale and fosters a sense of belonging among sailors and aviators. NAVY.MIL.PH
