Military officials in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao are investigating an accidental launch by an MG520 armed helicopter of one of its rockets that landed and exploded at the northside open field of the Awang airport on Tuesday, October 13.

The Awang airport, also known as Cotabato airport, is next to Camp Siongco, the headquarters of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division and the Philippine Air Force-Tactical Operations Group-12.

“The rocket went off at the open field as the helicopter was hovering but nobody was hurt,” Lt. Col. Anhouvic Atilano, spokesman of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, said of the 8 a.m. incident.

The blast, however, was heard around villages in the area and as far as Barangay Tamontaka of the city.

The 6ID, however, was quick to clarify that the blast came from a malfunction of the rocket weaponry system of the military helicopter.

“The blast was really strong that it shook the ground,” Kris Kitem, a resident of Barangay Broce near the airport said.

The 6ID said it will implement stricter measures to prevent a repeat of the incident. PNA.GOV.PH
