AFP chief leads unveiling of shrine for Medal of Valor awardee


The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Cirilito Sobejana led the Unveiling of Medal for Valor Marker in honor of 1st Lieutenant Lolinato G. To-ong on Thursday, May 13, at Barangay Cabacungan, La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

Also present in the activity were Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, Mayor Rhumyla Nicor-Mangilimutan and Rev. Fr. Ludivico To-ong.

1Lt. To-ong came from Barangay Cabacungan and was an officer of the Philippine Marine Corps. He was posthumously bestowed with the Philippine’s highest military award for courage for sacrificing his life in a battle against the MILF rebels in Maguindanao, on April 30, 2000.

“With his remarkable courage, it is with great honor that I join the people of La Castellana in the unveiling of this shrine that memorialized the heroic deeds of the late 1Lt. Lolinato To-ong Sr.,” General Sobejana said.

The unveiled Hero Shrine for 1Lt. To-ong reads: “His ultimate sacrifice saved several soldiers in one of the most ferocious battles between the military and the MILF.”


Governor Lacson said that 1Lt. To-ong’s fellow Negrenses will take inspiration and will always remember his valiant deed through the marker.

“This is our way of immortalizing his valor and heroism both for the present and future generations. As people, we need to have a constant reminder of things that are noble and honorable for us to look up to, to value, and to emulate,” the Governor stated.

General Sobejana who is also a Negrense and a recipient of the Medal of Valor award said that 1Lt To-ong’s act of service motivates the men and women of the AFP.

“It is through the selflessness and dedication of men like 1Lt. To-ong that the Armed Forces of the Philippines continue to attain notable accomplishments in fulfilling its mandate of bringing and securing the peace for the people in our communities,” the AFP Chief said. AFP.MIL.PH
