Today, February 27 marked a historic day for the Philippines as the first-ever underground railway system, the Metro Manila Subway, broke ground in Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela City.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade led the unveiling of the scale model of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) that will be used in the construction of the Metro Manila Subway.
Meanwhile, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koji Haneda operated the backhoe at the construction site.
In transporting the Filipinos to the ‘Golden Age of Infrastructure,’ the DOTr will ensure that nobody is left behind. Twenty (20) Informal Settler Families (ISFs) were awarded certificates of entitlement during the groundbreaking ceremony, as the first batch of recipients of the relocation program launched in coordination with the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council, National Housing Authority, and the City Government of Valenzuela. One hundred sixty-three (163) ISFs are also undergoing pre-qualification process for relocation to Disiplina Village II in Brgy. Bignay, Valenzuela City.
The 36-km Metro Manila Subway will have 15 stations, crossing 7 local governments and 3 of Metro Manila’s business districts, connecting Quezon City all the way to NAIA Terminal 3 in just around 30 minutes. The Subway aims to provide a safe, efficient and speedy mass transit system using Japanese technological advancements in disaster resilience. DOTR
