An all-Filipino scientific research team was sent off on April 22 to conduct scientific expedition dubbed as “PROTECTWPS: Predicting Responses between Ocean Transport and Ecological Connectivity of Threatened ecosystems in the West Philippine Sea.”
According to Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)’s Agos ng Buhay, the expedition team is composed of seventy-two participants from different agencies led by the UP Marine Science Institute, in partnership with the DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau and the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
DENR Agos ng Buhay, also known as Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Management Program (CMEMP), is the nation-wide flagship project of DENR for coastal and marine biodiversity.
The expedition team is “bound to explore and conduct biological and oceanographic research activities within Kalayaan Island Group-West Philippine Sea (KIG-WPS),” DENR Agos said.
It added that the expedition aims to generate baseline data in order to further understand the changes occurring in the country’s marine ecosystems.
